Want to learn the basics about using CyVerse data?

For basic information and an overview of the different methods of downloading and uploading CyVerse data, see Manage Data on the CyVerse website.

CyVerse can help you with your data storage needs, whether structured or unstructured, small or large. Different interfaces are available, from web services to mountable file systems to high-speed command-line transfers.

In addition to managing your data as a CyVerse user within the Discovery Environment, you can use iCommands, Cyberduck, FUSE Mount, and iDrop Desktop. You can even download public data without a user account; see Downloading Data Files Without a User Account for more information.

There is no additional step required for simple hosting. When a CyVerse account is created, data is accessed via the Discovery Environment or iRODS web client. More steps are required if you want to use the command-line interface (required for very large datasets) or Atmosphere. If you have an older, existing account and discover that your iRODS data access has not yet been set up, contact CyVerse Support for assistance.

Data allocations

Users have an initial allocation of 100 GB. Additional allocation can be requested by submitting an allocation increase using this form. Please be aware that extremely large requests may need to go through an allocation committee process. For questions, please contact CyVerse Support.

Want to know about CyVerse Home, Data Commons and shared data collections?

The iRODS model is very similar to other file systems that contain files and directories. In iRODS terminology, a directory is called a collection. The CyVerse Data Store contains two collections: one for personal data (your home directory) and the other for community shared data.

  • Home (personal) directories: Home directories are available under /iplant/home/<iplant_username>, where <iplant_username> is your valid CyVerse user name. By default, only the named user has read and write access to files stored in his or her home directories. The current Discovery Environment release displays the user's home directory at the base level of the Data window.
  • Data Commons: Community Released Folders and CyVerse Curated Data:

Data collections that have been made available to the public are stored under  /iplant/home/shared. The current Discovery Environment release displays public data at the base level of the Data window under "Community Data".

  • Private files or folders shared with you: Files and folder that have been shared with you individually are available under /iplant/home/<iplant_username>, where <iplant_username> is the CyVerse user name of the person who shared the data. The current Discovery Environment release displays the shared data at the base level of the Data window under "Shared with me".
