About using VNC with Atmosphere

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a way to share a graphical desktop environment. The underlying protocol works across operating systems and platforms, and allows a remote user or users to access, use, and share a computer system. There are many free VNC clients, or viewers, some of which are mentioned in the next section. The Atmosphere VNC enables one or many Atmosphere users to access a machine that is being run on iPlant resources from the user's local machine.

There are two ways to use VNC with Atmosphere:

  • Airport VNC runs a built-in Java VNC viewer from a web browser within the Atmosphere Airport interface and requires Java. This is the more common use.
  • The VNC Viewer application is an open-source application that uses an installed binary file, requires installation and setup, and runs through your operating system. You also can install the appropriate Enterprise Edition VNC Viewer for your operating system.

Launching the VNC Viewer

  1. Launch the VNC Viewer either from Airport or from the separate VNC Viewer:
    • To launch VNC from Airport:
      1. If necessary, log in to Atmosphere and launch the new instance.
      2. Once the instance is running, click the VNC tab:

Not all instances provide VNC access.

      3. If prompted to allow a Java applet, click Allow.
    • To launch the separate VNC Viewer application:
      1. If necessary to download the application, go to the download link for your operating system and install the application.

Open source and Enterprise editions are also available.

      2. Launch the VNC Viewer application.
  2. In the VNC Server field, enter the IP address for your instance, appending :1 after the IP address, as in the following example:
where 128.196.142.60 is the IP address, and :1 is the viewer session number.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter your iPlant username and password and click OK.
  5. Enter your password again and click Unlock.

Terminating a VNC Viewer session

You can terminate a VNC Viewer session either from the VNC tab in Airport or from the VNC Viewer application window:

  • To terminate the session from Airport: Click from the My Instances list or from the VNC tab:
  • To terminate the session from the VNC Viewer window: Click the icon in the top right of the window and then click Close.
