About uploading and importing data files and folders

This page contains:

You can upload single files, multiple files, and folders from your desktop and import single or multiple files from URL. Once imported, you can use the data files for analyses in the Discovery Environment and manage the data outside of the Discovery Environment using other tools, as well as upload files directly using iCommands. The method you use depends on the size and number of your data files, as well as your personal preferences.

You also can import test data files from the app's documentation page and download files and folders to your computer.

 If the window isn't updating...

 It may take up to 30 minutes for the window to be updated. Refresh your browser window to see if the changes have taken effect.

Uploading data files from your desktop

You can upload files from your desktop using two different methods:

  • Bulk upload allows you to upload multiple files of up to 4.0 GB. Uses the iDrop Lite Java applet.
  • Simple upload allows you to upload up to four files with a total of 1.9 GB of data.

You also can import files from URL. This is useful for files that are larger than 3-4 GB or not on your computer.

Doing a bulk upload from desktop

This method allows you to upload multiple files that contain up to 4 GB each and requires installation of the iDrop Lite Java applet. To learn more about downloading and using the Java iDrop desktop applet, see Using the iDrop Desktop and iDrop Lite Java applets. We recommend using Java version 6 (version 6 update x).

If you experience difficulties using this method, you may want to see which version of Java you are running.

  1. Open the Data window.
  2. Click the destination folder. (To create a new folder, see Creating a Folder.)
  3. Click the Import icon at the top left of the window and then click Bulk Upload from Desktop:
    Unable to render {include} The included page could not be found.
  4. If Inactive Plug-in is displayed, click the link and then click Enable and restart your browser.
  5. Click Allow to grant access to the iDrop Lite applet.
  6. In the Upload window, navigate to the folder in the Local Files column, which lists the files that may be uploaded from your computer.
  7. Select the file or files to upload and click Add Selected to Queue.
  8. In the Files Queued for Import column, verify that the destination folder is correct.
    • To select a different import folder, click Change Destination, navigate to the desired target location, and click Select.
    • To remove single files from the queue list, click .
    • To remove all files from the queue list, click Clear File Queue.
  9. Click Import Files to begin the import.
  10. When the iDrop Transfer Completed message is displayed, click OK.
  11. To upload another group of files, click Clear File Queue and repeat.
  12. When done, close the window by clicking the X in the top right and then click Yes to the confirmation prompt.

As the upload progresses, several status updates are displayed. For more information on notifications, see Viewing and Deleting Notifications.

Once you have received notification that your file has been successfully imported, it is available in the specified folder.

Doing a simple upload from desktop

This method is useful if you have smaller files or just want to upload or import one file at a time.

There is a maximum total file size of 1.9 GB per upload.

  1. In the Data window, select the destination folder.
  2. Click the Import icon at the top of the window and then click Simple Upload from Desktop:
    Unable to render {include} The included page could not be found.
  3. In the Upload window, either paste the URL or browse to select the first file to upload.
  4. Repeat for each file to upload up to a total of 1.9 GB.
  5. Click Upload.

As the upload progresses, several status updates are displayed. For more information on notifications, see Viewing and Deleting Notifications. Once you have received notification that your file has been successfully imported, it is available in the specified folder.

Importing data files from URL

This method is useful when you want to import larger files, have some files you want to upload and some you want to import from URL, or the file isn't on your system.

  1. Copy the URL for the file you want to import.
  2. In the Data window, click the destination folder.
  3. Click the Import icon at the top of the window and then click Import from URL:
    Unable to render {include} The included page could not be found.
  4. In the first cell, paste the URL for the first data file to import.
  5. Repeat for each file to import.
  6. Click Upload.

As the import progresses, you receive several status updates in the form of popups, notifications, and emails. For more information on notifications, see Viewing and Deleting Notifications. Once you have received notification that your file has been successfully imported, it is available in the specified folder.

 If the window isn't updating...

 It may take up to 30 minutes for the window to be updated. Refresh your browser window to see if the changes have taken effect.
